COLONIAL CHURCHES

The first church founded and builded up was at the beginning of XVII century at grounds that the spanish colonizer called... villages of natives.
The temples are one construction with a big front door, surround by walls that delimit the holy space where are the procession.
The bell tower, church depending at the central corp of the chapel, is a latest annexed that adopted several positions with respect of the church. For the altiplanic culture this duality of church-bell tower shows a male-female relationship.


SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA CHURCH

Parrochial church since 1641.
The walls of the present day are from 1744.
After a fire was restored between the years 1839 and 1943.
The adobe tower was annexed in 1964, replacing the oldest wooden one.
The last important restoration was directed by the jesuit priest Gustavo Le Paige with the help of the chilean Army.
The party of the patrons of San Pedro de Atacama, Saint Pedro and Saint Pablo, are celebrated on June the 28th and 29th.
On February 2001, the altar and five wax holy scultures was burned by vandals. After, the village artisan gived the reconstruction of this holy images that nowaday are exhibited at the altar.
