Woody plants with a lot of morphology and xeromorphic characteristics that gives great living capacity at this arids environments. Has photosynthetic stem called cladode, capable to reserve water, cover by a thick cape of wax and leafs transformed in thorns. It have acid metabolism and stomas that open only by nights for to absorbe CO2. Flowers are generally solitaire and the fruits are berries. Is an american distribuitor family with only one specie in Africa. In Chile you find 85 species of complicated classification. The morphology of the cactaceas are variable and as the plant form you can distinguished the following types:




Inside the cactaceas subfamily you find the echinopsis, branching column from the base and with horizontal growing. At the central zone of Chile exist: Chiloenis Echinopsis and Litoralis Echinopsis. In the north atacamenian altiplano the Atacamensis Echinopsis is protected.

Cactea with simple form with few branches that grows till 6 mts. high. It live between the 3000 to 3800 mts. at the andean highland. It is close to San Pedro de Atacama on the way to the Tatio Geyser, at the slope of Paniri volcano, Cupo community and at Loa river highest.



ALGARROBO Ceratonia siliqua L. Family: Papilionaceas
The algarrobo is a long living tree that belongs to the leguminous plant family. Count with a great capacity for to live in the desert, because of the ability for to capture nitrogen and water by the long roots. The trunk rise 18 mts. high and 2 mts diameter, with large flexible thorny branches. Twice a year give light yellow colour flowers. Between December and March is the principal fructification, but also give fruits between June and July in less quantity. The algarrobo is a green vegetable fruit use for the elaboration of atacamenian haloja, popular fermented maize of nice taste with curative properties for the stomach and kidneys. Also is use for the elaboration of flour and for animals food.


CHAÑAR Geoffroea decorticans. Family: Leguminous plant
Wild tree of medium size, grows and rise till 10 mts. and half meter diameter. The fruits have the shape and size of an olive, you can eat it and have sweet taste. Also is the base for the elaboration of a throat syrup called arrope. The trunk is green colour and the chañar wood is useful for the elaboration of coal. Have green leafs with yellow hermaphrodite flowers that flourish in spring time. The chañar geographic distribution is at the driest regions of the country, specially central and north. In Argentina you can find chañar trees from Jujuy till the north of the patagonia. The chañar fruit was a very important diet for the atacamenian natives. The wood is quoted for construtions.

TAMARUGO Prosopis tamarugo. Family: Minosaceae
Original tree from the first region of Chile. Grows at saline places, atracting the humidity of the underground water tables. Rise till 10 mts. with a trunk of 1 meter diameter, also have thorny branches of 3 mts. lenght. The base ramificate in several trunks. The seeds and foliage are food for animals. The tamarugo special characteristic is that resist years of drought. This tamarugo trees was use in projects like The Desert Reforestation (Reforestando el Desierto).


   

RICA RICA

Alcantholippia deserticola Familiy: Verbenaceae
Perennial plant of 50 cms. It grows with tolilla and bailahuen. In October appears the violet colour flowers. You can prepare it, toasting the stem and leafs, and drink it as tea. Is a very aromatic plant. As home medicine is use as herbal tea for stomach pain. Also is useful for stop diarreas and illness caused by the eating of heavy food.

CHACHACOMA

Senecio eriophyton remy. Family: Asteraceae
Highland plant of 20 cms. with yellow flower and grows at 4000 mts. In medicine it is a helpful herb for the high puna and air illnesses. Is nice for head pain, stomach pain, also for bronchitis, asma, cough and head cold. It is appreciated as tonic and stimulating. You can use chachacoma for head colds as steam.... inhale the smoke.

QUINOA

Highland cereal, quinua or canigua. (chenopodium quinoa). Is an herbaceous plant and rise till 80 cms. high. The quinoa fruit is 2 mm. diameter and of several colours. Is a native plant from the occidental Andes, you have more quinoa at Bolivia and Peru, also at Colombia and Chile. The preparation of the quinoa fruits is washing it before cooking it as rice. The leafs and the stems are forage for the animals.

LLARETA

Azorella
Compact of low growing. The llareta flowers are small and yellow colour. When it get dry, the llareta is an excellent fuel, that is why that in the old times was indiscriminated cutted for firewood.

COCA LEAF (HOJA DE COCA)

Erythroxilium Coca
The cultivation of different variety plants is from Colombia to Bolivia. Coca leaf was use in ceremonies, rituals and native medicine since pre europe time. Nowaday the rituals and ceremonies keeps going. However the habitual consumption decrease in a big quantity. In medicine the coca leaf is use like chewing it in infusions, smokes and steams for to fight the high illnesses (puna o sorojche), high pressure, fatigue and painfull stomach problems. To chew coca leaf with small lime stones, produce the liberation of alcalodes for to reduce the cold, fatigue and hunger effects.

J'ai dj utilis du sirop de chaar pour soulager mes problmes respiratoires lorsque je suis alle en Argentine. Maintenant, j'aimerais bien m'en procurer au Qubec (Canada). es muy importante el valor que tiene las plantas como punto medicinal, y que cad vez ve esas plantas en forma silvestre no dndole el valor qu e tienen, abr`esta pginas para saber como se siembra el chaar y el tamarugo-.

En San pedro de atacama estn las siguientes especies de algarrobo:
Prosopis alba var. alba
Prosopis flexuosa
No est descrito Prosopis chilensis tan al norte en Chile.
